Tips For Making The Most Of Your Child’s Pediatrician Appointment

Unfortunately, a trip to the pediatrician's office can be a whirlwind affair. You take your sick child to see the doctor and only have a few minutes to discuss the problem before they leave to see the next patient. You leave with some written advice and perhaps a prescription, but you do not really feel better about the situation. Because of the number of patients that need to be seen each day, there really is no way for them to spend more time with you. However, there are some things you can do to ensure you get the most out of the visit and feel better when you leave.

Be Prepared

Before you head out the door, make a list of all the symptoms your child is experiencing. Be as detailed as possible, but do not add in things that are not important. Make sure to include how long the symptoms have been going on and to what degree. It is best to give this information to the nurse who checks your child in. All this will be put in the chart for the doctor to look over before getting to the room. They will then discuss each thing with you to ensure that the information is correct. Doing this will not only ensure you don't forget something important, but will also save time.

Be Courteous

It is very important that you stick to your appointment time. Do not think that you can show up even a few minutes late and still expect the same treatment. The office personnel are very busy with other patients who need their help, too. In addition, do not use your phone, stare off into space, or participate in any other activities that will make the nurse or doctor repeat themselves. Of course, if you do not understand something, be sure to ask right away.

Communication Options

You may be able to get a lot of information over the phone from a nurse. Do not hesitate to call if you have any questions. However, be prepared to have to wait for them to have the time to call you back. Call once, ask the question, and then be patient. You could also send an email with your concerns. This will give them extra time, as they can quickly send a response from home.

Pediatricians and their nurses, like those at Better Family Care, offer top care — but they are also are very busy, every day. When your child needs to be seen due to an illness, make sure you take advantage of the short amount of time you will have with them.
